I'm often asked why I decided to write dark romance. I have many romance-reading friends, and they don't necessarily equate me to being a dark romance girly...even though I am.
The reason why I write dark romance is pretty simple: I tell the stories that need to be told. I highlight the realities that society wants survivors to ignore.
Winter Vaughan (the FMC of my debut, The Shadowplay Trilogy) is a survivor of assault, neglect, and abuse. Despite her past, she has gone through the fire to heal.
She had to learn how to use tools. She had to commit to therapy and meds and other resources to help her get well.
She lives with the artifacts of her trauma.
Anxiety is her long-term companion.
Some so many girls are just like Winter—who have histories so damn similar to hers.
I'm one of them.

I haven't gone through all the things that Winter has gone through in her life, but I know there are women out there who have gone through exactly what Winter has gone through in this trilogy.
Their stories deserve to be told—especially in a world where victims often aren't believed, are ostracized, and are told to be silent.
Writing this story is my way of getting loud. We have to talk about these things.
Because silence kills.
I hope you love Winter as much as I do, and if you see yourself in her, I hope you see how amazing you are, too.
Xo,
Angel
